Last year, Dr. Marina Anuk came to Uganda to study the practices of her Ugandan colleagues. According to her, what she witnessed in Uganda shook her to the core. In Uganda, says Dr. Anuk, there are no modern treatments for joint pain.
After making these bold statements, Dr. Marina Anuk agreed to give an exclusive interview. What did the world-famous rheumatologist find barbaric about how joint pain is treated in Uganda? Why does she claim that local remedies only provide temporary relief — while actually accelerating joint destruction?

— You stated that Ugandan methods for treating joint pain only cripple people. Can you comment on this?
Of course. But let me begin by saying this: I have deep respect for Uganda — its culture, its people, and its traditions. However, when I first saw the methods being used here to treat joint pain, I was in complete shock. I thought I was witnessing a nightmare — or some kind of cruel joke. But unfortunately, this is the harsh reality I face every single day.
Please understand me correctly. I’ve been treating patients with arthritis, osteoarthritis, bursitis, tendinitis, osteochondrosis, rheumatism, gout — and many other joint diseases for more than 24 years. Over these years, I have witnessed some of the most severe cases imaginable. But what I saw in Uganda shook me to my very core.
People come to doctors with mild joint pain, and just a few months later, they end up in wheelchairs — sometimes even undergoing amputations. Why? Because instead of using modern, science-based treatment methods, Ugandan doctors still rely on outdated, harmful methods that not only fail to help — they make things worse day after day.

Patients are prescribed painkillers that merely mask the problem temporarily, while in reality, they accelerate joint destruction. Doctors recommend heating or cooling painful joints — which only worsens swelling, triggers inflammation, and destroys cartilage. And the so-called 'miracle' ointments — praised as cure-alls are nothing but lies. Best case? They do nothing. Worst case? They burn your skin, cause sepsis — and end in amputation.
How is this even possible in the 21st century? How can anyone stand by and watch people being turned into invalids, sent down a path of suffering, when modern and effective treatments are available? Why do we allow lives to be destroyed when we have medical technologies that can genuinely help?
And after everything I’ve seen — you ask me to comment??? I refuse to stay silent any longer! Your country is on the verge of a catastrophe, and no one seems to care! Ugandans deserve better. They deserve a life without pain. Without fear. Without watching their health ripped apart. That is exactly why I am giving this interview. I am calling on all Ugandan media: this issue demands urgent attention!
— How exactly can joint pain progress to disability or even amputation?
A joint is a natural 'hinge' that allows us to move. Inside this 'hinge', the bones are covered with elastic cartilage — a kind of 'shock-absorbing cushion' that reduces friction and lets the joint move without pain. Surrounding this structure is synovial fluid — the body's natural 'lubricant', which further protects the joint from wear and tear.
Joint pain is like rust eating away at this entire mechanism. Once the protective cartilage layer is worn down, the bones start grinding against each other, leading to even more damage and unbearable agony.
Heating or cooling ointments, folk remedies, and painkillers — so popular in Uganda — at best, only mask the problem temporarily; they do nothing to stop this. It’s like painting over rust on a machine — it may look better from the outside, but the destruction continues. And when the disease progresses too far, your joints will become an endless source of excruciating pain, ultimately leading to amputation, trapping you in a wheelchair for the rest of your life.
To avoid such devastating consequences, you must not just suppress the symptoms — you must eliminate the root cause and act fast.
— What modern treatments for joint pain are used in Israel?
In Israel, we’ve been using cutting-edge treatments for joint diseases for years — specifically designed to restore joints at the cellular level. This allows us to eliminate the root cause of the disease rather than just suppress its symptoms. It is simply not in their interest for patients to actually recover.

Please, I beg you — don’t wait! Joints do not heal on their own. This is not a cold that will go away in a week. If you don’t start treatment immediately, in six months, it might already be too late.
At first, you’ll simply struggle to get out of bed in the morning. Then, every step will start to feel uncomfortable. Soon, even climbing the stairs will become agony. But that’s only the beginning. The pain will intensify, tormenting you day and night. Your joints will begin to deteriorate, losing their ability to move. At some point, even the simplest actions — lifting your arm, bending your knee, turning your head — will become unbearable torture. And in just six months, you could end up bedridden, completely dependent on others, unable to walk, with no hope of ever regaining a normal life.
I’m not telling you this to scare you — I’m telling you this to warn you. You still have time to stop this process.
